Is Bigger Really Better?

4 signs your Aircon is too big for your room.

Is bigger really better? Isn’t that the question everyone always asks? Bigger car, bigger house, bigger swimming pool, bigger…..air conditioning unit? Ok, maybe the latter isn’t the most frequently called upon display of ostentatiousness, but it is actually a thing.

Take for example the question of your room or building size. The size of your aircon installation is actually of critical importance to its functionality and efficiency. Not only that, but individual spaces vary quite remarkably in their heat load.

Ok, I can see this is already losing you. For starters, what on earth is a ‘heat load’? A room’s heat load is made up of the volume of heat that flows out of the room through the walls, floors and ceiling or because of ventilation. When it comes to air conditioner installation, considering these components in the individual room are critical to assessing the right make and model for your space. WHY is this so important? Because if you choose the wrong fit for your air con, you stand to lose both efficiency in the system and it can end up costing you more. I think we can all agree that bigger bills are NOT what anyone wants.

With our local areas of The Gold Coast, Tweed Heads, Murwillumbah and Byron Bay needing year round air conditioner usage, whether for heating or cooling, the wrong choice in purchasing an aircon unit can prove seriously costly over the long term.  While you might be tempted to think that the bigger the unit, the better, the reality is that there’s a lot more to the science of efficiency (and therefore cost). Getting an expert in the field to assist you in making the right choice will help you not only save money, but also keep cool and calm* during the summer months. (*Note – we can’t help you with the existential crisis but temperature control helps).

So, taking our word for it, here are some of the reasons why size matters in aircon life:

  1. Short Cycling – If your air conditioner installation is too big, it will automatically turn on and off more frequently. What that means is that it’s shutting down because it’s detecting the incorrect temperature of the room as a whole. While an efficient air  con installation will typically run for 15 minutes, an air con unit that is too large will be likely to hit stop at around 8 minutes. That’s nearly a 50% drop in its cycle.
  1. You’ll experience higher humidity –  Not something you want if you live in tropical climates like Murwillumbah. This happens when the shortened cycle of your system doesn’t get the chance to properly remove the vapour in the air. Your unit realistically needs between 20 – 30 minutes to effectively dehumidify a space. Without this function the potential for mould is very real and no one wants that.
  1. Your bills will get higher – With the effect of the short cycling, the energy usage of your air conditioner installation goes up. So is bigger better? A large unit can work effectively – but as we’ve started to explain, it needs to be the RIGHT FIT for the space.
  1. You can’t hear yourself think – The modern world is a remarkable thing and comfort is a blessing, but no one wants to be constantly reminded that their air con unit is there doing its job, like a utility version of the needy elephant in the room. The right sized air conditioning installation won’t do that. It’ll do its job nicely, quietly and without need for constant attention.
